Shillong Revival

Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place

Evan Roberts, an ordinary man who played an extraordinary role in the Welsh revival of 1904.

Revival History

How it began….
The Welsh Revival of 1904 sparked off something that has since not stopped encircling the globe. The Khasi hills were touched by the same fire in 1906. From what was a small work in the Khasi hills, in Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya, the impact rapidly spread all over North East India.

Roots of Revival
The Lord did not suddenly appear in revival power in Wales. For several years, people had been deeply moved to seek Him for revival. One of these, Seth Joshua, led a congregation to pray "Lord, bend me". In that message one young man, Evan Roberts was powerfully impacted.

On 30 Oct 1904, he received his marching orders. "You must go". He left the Grammar School he was attending, to hold prayer meetings in his home. As he arrived, he told his mother, "There will be a great change in less than a fortnight. We are going to have the greatest revival that Wales has ever seen".

The prayer meetings started on 31 Oct with 17 people. By the time he was done with his life’s work, he has led a mammoth 100,000 people to faith.

Social Impact
Soon the big showers came, with people crying for forgiveness, making up old quarrels, paying their debts.  Bars closed down, and why not, for their clientele was in church! Police stations emptied out for crime disappeared. Courts had little work to do. It was social transformation of unimaginable size and scope.

Global Impact
The revival of 1904 was the most wide-spread of all Awakenings, effecting India, Korea and China, renewing revivals in Japan and South Africa, and sending a wave of awakening over Africa and Latin America.
